Half the page weight, and a menu that finally opens
Blog · 24 September 2026 · Behind the scenes
We spend a lot of care on the apps and rather less on the site that presents them. So we sat down and audited every page of treeinspired.com — structure, accessibility, mobile layout, page weight. Here is what we found, because the findings are more interesting than the fixes.
The menu that could not be opened
On four product pages — ICD-10, Read, Kompendium and Dockti — the navigation links were hidden below 768 pixels, as they should be on a phone. What was missing was the button to open them again. There was no hamburger, no fallback. On a phone, every navigation item was simply unreachable, including the App Store button.
This is the kind of bug that survives for months, because the people who look at the site most are sitting at a desk. The four pages now have a proper menu button, and it closes on Escape or a click outside.
A 919 KB favicon
The ICD-10 page referenced its 1024-pixel app icon as the browser tab icon. Nearly a megabyte, downloaded to render something sixteen pixels wide. The same icons were used at full resolution in the app grid, where they are displayed at 140 pixels.
Right-sized variants and a lossless recompression pass over 38 images — every file verified pixel-identical afterwards — cut the download considerably:
| Page | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| Home | 3945 KB | 1926 KB |
| Screenshotli | 2725 KB | 1169 KB |
| Read | 3492 KB | 2432 KB |
Footers nobody could read
Every page ends in a dark footer with column headings, links and a copyright line. Measured against their background, the headings came in at 1.9:1 and the copyright line at 1.34:1. The threshold for readable body text is 4.5:1. They were decoration that happened to contain words.
Rather than pick new colours by eye, we computed, for each page and each element, the lowest opacity that clears 4.5:1 against that page's own footer gradient — keeping every hue exactly as it was. The footers still recede. They are now legible while doing it.
The rest
- The imprint table forced 48 pixels of horizontal scrolling on a phone; the rows now stack.
- Back arrows and menu buttons were 17×24 and 32×24 pixels. They are 44×44 now.
- Two latent crashes in our shared JavaScript: an unguarded
nav.offsetHeightandquerySelector('#'), which throws. - Heading levels jumped from h2 straight to h4 in the footer on fourteen pages.
prefers-reduced-motionis now respected.
What we did not change
Three page titles are slightly longer than search results display, and a handful of buttons put white text on brand colours at around 3.5:1. Both are judgement calls about wording and brand rather than defects, so we left them and wrote them down instead.
The honest summary: none of this was hard. It just had never been measured.
